The Portrait Project
Feyerabend painted over 2500 unique faces over the past 7 years, resulting in the worlds largest portrait collection executed by a single artist. Below are links to 100's of ficticious portraits ordered by year of creation.
2002 faces one time art installation by Hans Feyerabend, December 2002 (Pictures of the opening reception: Friday, December 6, at 7pm, Music by DJ James Brian at Gallery Vincent, Coconut Grove, FL). Over 1000 select portraits from the 2002 faces series were on display at this one time multimedia installation at Gallery Vincent in Coconut Grove, accompanied by slide projections, music, and 3-dimensional work. The core of the work are 9” x 9” oil and acrylic on canvas- and cardboard portraits, mounted on panels and assembled in a 20’ x 30’ installation in the main room of the Gallery. The other prortraits from the 2002 faces series are in show locations throughout Miami, Berlin, Germany and in various private collections in Florida.
Concept: 2002 faces is a hommage to time, measured in years, from its origin to present day in the western world. For every year, there is a portrait. As the name implies, there are a total of two thousand and two portraits; all of which are oil and/or acrylic paint on gesso-primed board (9" x 9" format).
The concept of 2002 faces is to create one large work of art which is comprised of many paintings - shown in its entirety, only once. At the end of the event, the displayed portraits were for sale at a relatively low price. In selecting one or more paintings, the investor creates his or her own composition. The former complexity of the overall exhibit transforms into personal configurations.
This project focuses on painted head shots, all of them created 2000 -2002. Shown are not portraits of actual people, but of ficticious characters. The work matches the line which trails the movie credits, "The persons and events in this motion picture are ficticious. Any similarities to actual persons and events are unintentional...".
And like some motion pictures, the works on display will reveal complexity and depths to those viewers who are willing to accept and discover the characters. The face as the-mirror-of-our-soul allows a seemingly endless variety of expressions and interpretations.
In an era of flagrant copying and overused images, the portraits demonstrate a refreshing spin on the many unique characters we encounter in life. They are faces which, for whatever reason, seem strangely familiar.
